Frequently Asked Questions
How does a hurricane impact window work?
During a storm, the atmospheric pressure inside your home remains
constant because the windows and doors remain closed. Outside, the
pressure rises in relationship to the storm’s strength. The
differential in pressure is what can become dangerous. Any piece
of flying debris can penetrate a window and when this happens, your
entire residence is at risk for catastrophic damage.
Impact windows protect your home against airborne
debris. This is done in a variety of ways, but mainly using laminated
glass with possibly resin or gas between the between the panes.
These windows look just like an ordinary window. Impact windows
also provide a greater level of security against intrusion, increased
soundproofing, and make your home more energy efficient.
If I install impact
windows, do I still need shutters?
No! In the event of a storm, you won’t need to do anything other
than ensure your impact windows are closed and locked. And, unlike
windows covered with shutters or plywood, you will have daylight in
your home if the electricity is out during the storm.
Can impact windows be tinted?
Yes, impact windows come in a variety of tints, just like non-impact
windows.
Are impact windows
only available in certain styles?
Impact windows are available in a large variety of styles, just like
non-impact windows, and can also be custom designed.
Don’t hurricane
shutters offer the same level of protection as impact windows and
doors?
No. A shutter only keeps flying debris from impacting the glass. Your
existing non-impact window or door still has to withstand the high
winds pressure and wind driven rain. Often a non-impact window or
door will leak or the opening sash may blow in during high winds due
to less rigid frames than impact products.
Do impact windows
meet Miami-Dade and/or South Florida building codes?
Yes. All impact windows sold by Pioneer Hurricane Window and Doors
meet or exceed these codes for hurricane protection. Miami Dade Approved
Products must meet 150 mph & zone 5 applications (higher pressures).
In order to receive NOA (notice of acceptance) for any window or door,
the manufacturer must supply a third party testing organization actual
product samples. These samples undergo numerous tests and then receive
a rating. Products that pass Miami Dade’s testing requirements
will pass the State of Florida’s requirements.
Can my sliding glass
doors and French doors be made out of impact glass?
Yes, sliding glass doors, in any size you need, can be made out of
impact glass, as can French doors.
Are impact windows available in grids?
Yes, impact windows are available in the same grid patterns as non-impact
windows and can be custom designed.
I am going up North for 6 months,
do I need to do anything to my impact windows?
No, just ensure they are closed and locked, and your home will be
completely protected in the event of a hurricane.
